ELT 360: How did you start your business? What kind of virtual business do you have?
SCE: I started CES as a document preparation company preparing bankruptcy & divorce petitions. I was a paralegal by trade and wanted extra income. I have since grown to a small business consulting and VA company. We provide service based businesses with administrative, creative and project management support.

ELT 360: Have you always used this business model? If no: What made you change?
SCE: I transitioned my document preparation model to assisting clients in streamlining, automating and effective delegation strategies. I found in working with entrepreneurs that oftentimes they didn’t have operating procedures in place and/or were unsure of how to outsource. My goal was to make the partnership seemless on both parts and to see my client’s businesses grow.

ELT 360: On average how many VAs do you manage?
SCE: Three.

ELT 360: What are some of the pros to having a team/being an OBM?
SCE: I have time to do what I enjoy… consult and teach workshops. I also can take on more business without sacrificing time with my family.

ELT 360: What are some of the challenges to having a team/being an OBM?
SCE: Finding the right fit for my team is always a challenge. I expect greatness for my clients. I want to ensure my clients get the same level of service I would provide if doing the work myself.

ELT 360: How do you choose which VAs are a good fit to join your team?
SCE: I choose people that can follow the instructions during the application process, that answer my questions and that I connect with. I look for motivation and experience. I also listen to the VA’s goals and vision for their business.

ELT 360: What advice would you give to a VA who is looking to start their own team?
SCE: Make sure you have systems and an operating procedure in place before bringing on team members. Be ready to manage, not just hand off work. And be sure to thoroughly vet each team member. Check testimonials, portfolios, social media profiles and websites. Finally, make sure that whomever you bring on will represent your brand well.

ELT 360: What advice would you give a VA who is looking to join a team?
SCE: Research the company and let them know what value you can provide to the team. Be sure to follow instructions. Follow up on proposals. Don’t devalue the services you provide or compromise your business boundaries just because you are a part of a team.

ELT 360: Any other comments or last words?
SCE: Always know your worth. The service you provide is helping someone build their business AND it also helps you build yours.
